Nick has a high opinion of Gatsby and his reason for thinking this is Gatsby's polite manners, his mysteriousness and his wealth. All these characteristics are what make Gatsby the man he is and people respect that. These are the reasons why Nick thinks of Jay Gatsby as ''the Great Gatsby.'' One of the first things people notice about Gatsby is that he is a very polite man and Nick noticed this when they first met. When Nick failed to understand that he was talking to Gatsby himself for the first time, Gatsby reassured him that it was OK. He smiled at Nick understandingly that made him feel safe and secure. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. When he talks to people, he makes sure all his attention is focused on the person he's talking to. When people arrive at his parties uninvited, he is too polite to turn them way. When Nick asks people about Gatsby, they all give him different answers. At a party, Jordan tells him that he's an Oxford man and another woman tells Nick that Gatsby killed a man. People know very little of him so they make up rumors about him and nobody is sure of which are true or not. Nick lives right next door to him but still knows very little of him. When Nick sees Gatsby standing outside on the dock with his arms stretched out towards the water, he stands there wondering what he is doing. When Nick tries to figure out what he's looking at, he looks back at Gatsby again and he's not there anymore and this makes Nick wonder.
