This study aims to explore how far Fitzgerald has succeeded in conveying his theme of the disruption of the American dream, and how far he has managed in revealing the traits of his characters through the language they used from a pragmatic perspective. Fitzgerald portrayed the 1920s as an era of decayed social and moral values. Furthermore, this study aims to show how violation of politeness can reveal the speaker or the hearer evaluation of his or her social power, and therefore sheds light on the personality traits of the characters in the novel and the social stratification in the American society at that era.
