Poverty contributes to problems for a family and the choices these families make lead to a more difficult life. Greed for money can cause people to do things that they don’t want to and these tiny slips of green paper can cause a change in a person’s behavior. In the novel A Raisin in the Sun, the Younger family experiences poverty, leading to family issues. The Younger Family in A Raisin in the Sun struggles to make ends meet due to their financial situation. The Younger family lives in a poor neighborhood in apartment buildings that were small, rundown, and overcrowded. All of the family members in A Raisin in the Sun have unfulfilled dreams. While Beneatha and Walter are talking about the check that’s coming in they say, “ Beneatha: Well- you finally got it said... It took you three years but you finally got it said. Walter, give up; leave me alone -- It’s Mama’s money. Walter: He was my father, too! (Hansberry 23)” Walter’s dream of having a liquor store only needed money to start the business but unfortunately, he didn’t have that kind of money so he depended on getting the check his mother would get.
