TKAM ESSAY

To KILL A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Written in 1960 based in Monroe Alabama. TKAM was founded in Maycomb Alabama in the 1930s. The character Atticus Finch was based on Lee’s real father a liberal Alabama lawyer. Who frequently defended black men.

In TKAM the main focus is Racism. In many parts of the book racism is a disease that many people have. Atticus doesn't want his children to catch this disease. In 1930 black people were hated, mistreated, and discriminated against. White folk didn’t like black men or women.
In the book we have to recognize Tom Robinson, He is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch defends him to be able to raise his head in town, and stand tall. We must also recognize Calpurnia, She is a African-American cook/mother in the Finch residents. Atticus treats her like a person, Lets her work reasonable hours, she has a place to live, and if she wants to quit she can. Calpurnia takes the Finch kids to a black church instead of a white one because in the eyes of black people they visit the church for the same reason, to praise god.

Another main focus is poverty. Poverty in the 1930s is after the stock market crash. …show more content…

The Ewells live behind the Maycomb dump and are the poorest family that lives in the town. But according to Jem they are the richest family there because they lived in Maycomb for a long time. Same as the Cunninghams, they are also poor and they don’t take things they can't repay. A good example is Walter Cunningham, in the book Miss Caroline tried to give Walter some money to get some lunch, but he didn’t have anything to pay back. Also when Calpurnia invited Walter into the FInch house, he was given food and then poured molasses all over it stating he eats old rotten food.
