This has been revealed in various ways through texts such as The Crucible. A good name or reputation can influence, empower and determine how much respect a family or person gets from others. The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller and was set in the Massachusetts town of Salem in 1692. Salem was a theocratic and patriarchal society.
Abigail is one example of a character that allows jealousy to control her actions. For example, when John and Abigail talk to each other at the beginning, Abigail keeps broaching the topic of their love and also calls Elizabeth “...a cold, sniveling woman” (Miller 24). This shows that Abigail still loves John and hates Elizabeth because she is John’s wife which embodies jealousy. There are also many people in Salem that Abigail could have accused and Elizabeth has a good reputation which makes her a smaller target. During the Salem witch trials over two hundred people were accused of witchcraft and twenty were executed.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a dramatic play that expresses a very important message and that is how far people would go to save themselves from the hands of death. There are many characters in the Crucible who are guilty of taking innocent lives, but there are three major characters who, without a doubt, are the most at blame. The play takes place in the city of Salem, a city filled with people that would do anything to keep their reputation clean. Throughout the play, Miller is introducing multiple characters that experience changes in their decisions and negatively influence more people eventually leading up to the witch trials. The main point that the story revolves around is that people would rather lie and blame someone else instead of confessing and accepting the punishment.

When reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller the audience is pulled into a world of lies, witchcraft, and overwhelming authority. The book takes place in Salem massachusetts in 1692 where a group of girls are claiming witchcraft on whomever they may please, and following accusations by these ever so trusted girls characters must either confess to the acts of witchcraft or likely hang for lying about it. But there is also one main theme that is prominent in the crucible which is that authority is used as a way to convey oneself as dominant. The hierarchy of authority in the story is used as the audience reads through the book, they see more that authority is a way to convey themselves as dominant to characters who may be thought as lesser to them.
