Austin Owen Ms.McGlashen English 11 2nd hour Prejudices People A wise man once said,” All men are created equal.” That man was Thomas Jefferson. In the Tom Robinson trial tho, it was more like,” All WHITE men are created equal” and that is not far. That is shown in the book To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. To kill a Mockingbird takes place in Alabama during the Depression, and is narrated by the main character, a little girl named Jean Louise Finch or been known as Scout. And everyone in the book jump to conclusion. So what does that mean? Well in the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows how that people jump to conclusion without knowing what's really going on based on their prejudices. For example, Helen Robinson told the people that he would never do that women. People also accused him of him raping her because he’s black. There was a few people that know what going on with Tom Robinson was wrong. Those people where Atticus ,his children and the “black community.” Speaking of them, after the trial, Atticus was getting food from them because,” Atticus Finch has defended a black man, an act of good conscience, not without risks. Because the black people understand and admire the courage that it has taken for Atticus to do this, they bring him gifts as signs of their appreciation. Why is that important? To people not from this time period, this doesn’t mean as much. But back then, it was difficult for families to get food. And for the black community to give Atticus food for respect is nice thing to do. And this shows that they respect Atticus more than ever because they know that Tom Robinson didn’t rape Mayella and he the only white person in town that knows that. Speaking of Atticus, Atticus got accused himself. Yeah, people in Maycomb County didn’t like black people because people around the town accused Atticus to like black people more than white people. But, Atticus didn’t care what the color of your skin was, he like everyone the same amount. And even tho Tom Robinson didn’t rape Mayella Ewell, he stilled got punished for what he did. And what was his punishment?
