How come a tragic event in life can cause a person to have a psychological trouble? Well in the book The Catcher in the Rye written by J.D Salinger, we read about a character Holden Caulfield who has a clear psychological problem. I concluded that he has a post traumatic stress disorder also called PTSD. PTSD is a type of anxiety disorder, that can occur when gone through a extreme emotional trauma. Holden often refers to his dead brother, who is probably what causes this psychological trouble. This event caused Holden to have ambivalent thoughts, moods, and unreasonable behavior . Since Holden does not want to accept being part of the adult world, his thoughts will often switch from adult to a child. Holden does not have a lot of friend due to his harsh character. Negative, and ambivalent Holden describe the society as phony, but he is himself extremely spurious, like in this quote” I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life. It's awful. If I'm on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm liable to say I'm going to the opera.It's terrible”(chapter 3). Due to his depressive thought and mood , Holden will behave strangely. Trying to be an adult, Holden will try act like one, which causes him to not be himself and have a different behavior. Holden seems phony when he tries to become an adult. There is a part in the book that really shocked me, it is when he Holden took advantages of Jane’s emotion to kiss her. He knew that something was going wrong in Jane’s house, but that did not change anything, when he saw the opportunity he took it, she seemed not willing to do it.
