Slaughterhouse Five is a science fiction novel written by Kurt Vonnegut. Billy Pilgrim, the main character, has just graduated high school and enters school to become a Optometrist. After entering school, Billy gets drafted into the War. There, Billy gets beat up constantly by another soldier, Roland Weary. Billy also gets captured by German soldiers and survives a firebombing in Dresden. After the war, Billy goes back to school for Optometry. Billy works in an Optometry office in New York. One afternoon Billy goes to a luncheon at the Lions Club. After lunch he goes home for a nap. Billy’s doctor orders him to take a nap everyday. The doctor hoped that it would relieve a complaint that Billy had. The complaint the doctor received stated that Billy would find himself weeping for no apparent reason. A symptom of PTSD involves being emotionally unstable. Billy not having control over his emotions shows that he suffers from PTSD because he cries for no apparent reason. Since Billy cannot control his emotions, the doctor orders him to take a nap everyday. The doctor thinks that if Billy takes a nap everyday that in the future he will eventually stop crying. Billy relives many flashbacks to when he fought in the War, and the firebombing of Dresden. One of Billy’s flashbacks takes place during the war when Billy gets captured by the German soldiers. Billy joins a group during World War II. There he meets a man named Roland Weary and two regimental scouts. As Billy starts to lag behind the other three man, Weary begins to give Billy a hard time and informs him to keep up. Billy then explains to Weary and the scouts to go on without him, but Weary insists on helping Billy. The scouts have had enough of Weary and Billy so they leave them. Soon after Billy and Weary get seized by German soldiers. After being sent place to place by the Germans, Billy eventually ends up in Dresden. Billy stays in Dresden for two days when out of nowhere the Allies fire bomb it. Another symptom of PTSD involves reliving flashbacks relating to traumatic events. Billy having flashbacks shows that he suffers from PTSD because he relives moments in the war that caused him traumatic stress.
