While serving in war is hard, one will face danger from physcological impacts from war. In the movie Dunkirk, written and produced by Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, the Navy enlists the civilians that own a ship to accompany the evacuation of Dunkirk. However, Mr. Dawson, along with his son Peter and his best friend George, take their boat out by themselves. As they are sailing, they come across a sunken minesweeper with a sole survivor. They rescue the unnamed soldier and bring him on board. The soldier is very quiet, George asks Mr. Dawson on why the soldier is so quiet. Mr. Dawson replies saying “He’s shell-shocked, George. He’s not himself. He might never be himself again.” The soldier is suffering from PTSD, or also known as post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD is a disorder where a person has difficulty recovering after witnessing traumatic events. The soldier has experienced, for whatever reason, the sinking of his minesweeper. In the book Slaughterhouse-Five, Billy says, “If I hadn’t spent so much time studying Earthlings," said the Tralfamadorian, “I wouldn’t have any idea what was meant by ‘free will.’ I’ve visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe, and I have studied reports on one hundred more. Only on Earth is there any talk of free will." (Chapter 4). In order for Billy to get away from what he has witnessed from the war, he creates this whole new world where free will does not exist. Billy creates this world to get away from what has happened to him. He suffers from PTSD, and an incident can happen at anytime. He is not ready to fully go back to everyday civilian life. By having another world where Billy can just “unload” his feelings and emotions, is good because he has suffered through so much and has seen so much. Unlike in the movie Dunkirk, Billy has this place to go to unlike the unnamed soldier who lashes out at Mr.
