Puritan Beliefs and Practices Puritan is a christian pre existing religion that arose in the 1700’s. They were a protestant form of the church of england. They conflicted with the church and soon became to migrate. There beliefs and practices became to be known as how we still think today. Basic beliefs and practices make up who exactly the Puritans were. Beliefs strongly were based off of teaching for that of the Holy Bible. “It is difficult to specifically point out what exactly the puritans practices were” (Nair), but at the core of it puritans believed that the only head of the church is Jesus Christ. However unlike most churches during this time they believed God suggested that the bible be open to personal interpretation. They agreed with much of that like a normal church but they wanted abolition of clergy and for Jesus Christ to be the only head of the church. Since they separated themselves from the Church of England the king would see this as a test to power. They were often victims to religious suppression and normally charged with treason. Punishments for such acts could often mean death, imprisonment, and public execution (sail). The puritan movement tolerated and suppressed however continued to grow. Since this movement continued to grow the king would allow them receive religious but not in England. “Wealthy englishmen engaged in commerce, law, trading, manufacture, and joint stock holders were granted permission by James 1st to establish trading settlements in North America” (sail). By the 1640’s the enterprise at Massachusetts Bay had grown to be about 10,000 persons. “They had outgrown the bounds of the original settlement and spread into what would become Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine” (history).
