2. How was racial discrimination portrayed by Remi when he got to the city?
In page 47 of the book Remi told Jane that Jane was different from him, that Jane was different from all of them, the tribe. And also in page 48, Jane said that her father left South Africa because he could not bear a racial regime. This statement of Jane’s father just proves that racial discrimination among government positions and Job positions are based on the race of the person. And we could ask why Remi left his tribe? Remi left his tribe for the reason that education in Remi’s tribe is not as good as what education provides in the city. These statements and reasons of why Remi had gone to the country and leave his tribe are some of the proofs that showed that there is a barrier between the tribe’s men and those people who lived in the city, which is racial discrimination. Remi also elaborated that Jane had never experienced what Remi had experienced that Jane did no gone through what Remi had gone through, what his tribe had gone through because of this thing called racial discrimination and colonization of the white men, that is also the reason why Remi told Jane that the tribe would not accept Jane. And according to his research 46 out of 88 persons that they have interviewed said that there is still a lot of racial discrimination against African Americans and the 42 who are left said that there is some racial discrimination against African Americans. Also Kristen Cercone who wrote Racism in the education system stated that there are inequalities in educational system when it comes to dark skin toned students as opposed to fair skinned students. It is said that dark skin toned students tend to be expelled three times more than white students, it also stated that when it comes to quality learning, dark skin toned students has less experienced professor while as fair skinned students has more variety of courses and more experienced professors. And these said factors can be a barrier for the students for success in higher education and career.
