In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the most significant themes is race and social class cause inequalities. For Example, race was a huge problem in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird which takes place in Maycomb during the 1930’s. Race during this time period caused many inequalities between black and whites in places such as churches, schools, restaurants, and even courts. During this time period “You know the truth, and the truth is this: some negroes lie, some negroes are immoral, some negro men are not to be trusted around women- black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men” (Lee 109). This quote is important because it shows that the previous quote isn't always correct as shown by Mayella Ewell tempting Tom Robinson after asking him to help her. This quote relates back to the theme because it shows eventually that although Tom Robinson was found guilty for this “crime” he was found guilty for his skin color not the evidence from the case. Finally, in Maycomb Atticus and most likely the entire Finch family believe one thing and that's that all people should be treated equal with no racial segregation and inequalities just because of skin color. Atticus especially thinks that "As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash" (Lee 117).
