Racism is the biggest part of the story as it is the novel's backbone. The events that happened to the Japanese Americans during World War II are sort of fuzzy when it comes to historical occasions that everyone learns about. The mixture of Japanese terminology in the novel informs the reader of how it felt to be in the position of being secluded from the rest of the country and in a camp with everyone looking the same as you.
