Angie Thomas new book, The Hate U Give, gives readers a new point of view on racism and police brutality. In the book the main character Starr experiences racism at home, school and community. Starr experiences racism at home. Starr’s dad tells her a story of how her ancestors ; “Daddy once told me there's a rage passed down to every black man from his ancestors, born the moment they couldn't stop the slave masters from hurting their families. Daddy also said there's nothing more dangerous than when that rage is activated”(Thomes ?). Starr’s dad is talking about how in the slave era their ancestors were subject to racism. That rage was passed down from generation to generation. Starr’s family never fully moved on from the past. In Starr’s school she makes two friends and at first they seem to be good friends but as the book continues one of her friends starts to show her true colors and as racist things happen Hailey (one of Starr’s friends) starts to be racist in her own way. “After all we’ve been though you think I am a racist!” Hailey says this to Starr in a way that makes Starr realizes that Hailey is not at all who she though she was. This is another example of Hailey being racist to Starr. “Hustle! Pretend the ball is some fried chicken. Bet you'll stay on it then”. In the past Hailey has made the fried chicken joke before and the first time it was kinda funny and after that it became more that Hailey is racist.
