As most people are aware, racism is still a big issue in today's society. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, racism is what the book is written around. Many people have different opinions on how it started, who causes it, what races it involves etc... Also, racism is a huge issue in To Kill A Mockingbird. The topic racism, is what the main events in the novel are written about and around. In this novel, Atticus Finch, the father of Jem and Scout Finch, is a lawyer. He has a case and in this case a black man, Tom Robinson, is accused of raping a white women. He has a choice: either defend Tom Robinson, or go against him in court. This book takes place in the 1930’s, and back then racism was almost at it's worst. Since racism was a huge issue back then, of course the people of the court and town, want Atticus to go against him, just because of his race. Atticus chooses to defend Tom, and obviously he gets a lot of hate for it. Words such as “nigger-lover” and “nigger-defender” are directed towards Atticus just for defending a man of a foreign race. As you can see, racism is definitely a hot topic in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. As well as the novel, racism is still a problem in today's
