In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, she expresses racism through characters such as the Maycomb people and Tom Robinson . Tom Robinson, a black man, is essentially the main catalyst of all the problems towards racism. He defines the hate that people bring even though it is unprovoked and innocent. Even when it was made apparent that Tom Robinson had tried his best to not harm Mayella even stating, “... I didn’t wanta push her or nothing’.(Page 198)” In the end, he was still accused of rapeing Mayella despite the fact that Tom Robinson answered all of the questions he was asked and Mayella didn’t answer when asked, “... Do you remember him beating you about the face? The witness hesitated…”(Page 188) including many other questions she was asked that she refused to answer that probably would have proven Tom Robinson innocent if she had answered with the truth instead of staying quiet.
