Aboriginal Lives under Fire Throughout the novel The Day Road by Joseph Boyden, there are scenes, attitudes, and references that relate to issues that indigenous people face. The issue of aboriginal men and women being physically, verbally, and mentally assaulted in Canada on a daily basis. This is presented through both Xavier and Niska’s experiences, Xavier’s being through his treatment in the war and Niska’s being from all throughout her life. Now imagine living in an area where your race is treated differently, where the mass population calls you a waste of space.
The reason racism still exists is because people continue to believe that some races are better than other races: Dred Scott vs Sanford, Plessy vs Ferguson, Shelly vs Kraemer. In the Dred Scott vs Sanford case, Dred Scott and his wife sued for their freedom from slavery. They fought in an 11 year legal struggle just to be free, but lost that battle. As the case was on its way to Supreme Court it grew in significance.
I believe that the United States has made great strides over the years to combat racism and other discrimination, but it is still a problem and needs to be eradicated.
In the novel Black Like Me, by John Howard Griffin, Griffin decides to conduct an experiment for a magazine article. In his experiment, he turns himself black and integrates himself into negro culture for about 6 weeks. A certain critic stated that even though he experienced racism, that he couldn’t truly empathize with them. I believe that this critic is wrong, and that Griffin spent enough time as a Negro to truly understand their struggle. While on his journey through the Deep South, he encounters many instances of racism either directed at him, or at the Negro population in general.

It is a story about how three women team up to form an alliance and secretively work on a writing project that would be shunned otherwise. The film portrayed the time when segregation existed between the whites and the blacks to be specific in the early 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. Racism has been around for a long time and it still exists today. It has been embedded to a degree that it reproduces itself. It is in the culture of the future generation. What is seen and taught to us in our environment is how we learn our behavior and actions towards others. Because of this, whether we realize it or not, racist behavior is taught and passed on.
When you think of racism, do you think of the past or present? Most people would say that there is no more racism and that it is a thing in the past, but now I am starting to question if it is really gone. Right now in the Dominican Republic people are being deported to Haiti just based on appearance. People with dark skin are automatically accused of being a Haitian, and are seen as inferior, and are being taken from the streets and deported to Haiti. Even the Dominicans, that are dark skinned, are being taken from their homes and are focused to get on a bus to Haiti.
Intrinsic racists believe that each race has a different moral status that are independent from moral characteristics that come from moral essences. Being the same race as someone else entails preferring that person over another who is not of the same race. For example, we have a greater moral interest in our biologically related brother than in a stranger. It is the “hatred” of one person to another individual, solely based on that person's belief that the person is inferior because of their language, birthplace and skin colour. Racism is an issue that has lasted throughout history, providing justification for a group’s dominance over another.
