Anyone who tried to bring any changes were excluded and under accusation. Mary Warren was excluded from the group of girls, just as she tried to make changes in the situation by telling the truth. The girls accused Mary of sending her spirit on them, in page 101 “Mary, do you send this shadow on me?’ and page 107 “Oh, please, Mary! Don’t come down.”
Despite his moral exclusion, he did love his wife and family very much. Rebecca Nurse is a holy old woman in The Crucible. For example, Rebecca spent a lot of time educating her children. She saw the children going through all kinds of the tide. She is a child specialist.
In The Crucible, a lot of characters were not judged fairly. Most of them were jailed or killed and it provided little proof of witchcraft. One character for example was Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca was first brought to trial when her name was brought up into court and so she was brought in to determine if she was capable of witchcraft or not. During the trial, Mary Warren pretended that Rebecca has summoned her soul to choke her.
Abigail A 17 year old girl who portrays herself to be sweet and kind, but is truly not what everything thinks she is. Abigail at one time worked in Proctor’s home. She was dismissed from Proctor’s home because Elizabeth found out what was going on. Abigail started to point fingers at people and telling lies to get back at Proctor. Abigail’s pay back to him affects everyone.
Dave Chappele is an iconic American stand up comedian, and actor from the DC area. Chappele was only 14 years old when he began doing stand up comedy at open mics, at an early age it was obvious with his lighthearted manner and fearless jokes that he had a knack for making people laugh. Chappelle graduated from the Duke Ellington School of Arts in 1991, Afterwards Chappele moved to New York city in hopes of taking his stand up comedy to the next level. Chappelle performed at Harlem Apollo Theater, and was booed off stage he was devastated to hit rock bottom once again in his life, but Chappele remained undeterred and continued to improve his craft. Also, since The Crucible was written to be parallel to McCarthyism, the same idea is shown. The same situation can be seen in The Crucible as Arthur Miller was influenced by the events that occurred during McCarthyism. In the Crucible, anyone whose name that had been mentioned underwent an investigation and was asked to prove that they were not partaking in witchcraft. Because this task was impossible, the court made rash decisions such as sending people to jail or sentencing them to be hanged. This scenario is seen in the crucible when Rebecca Nurse is accused.

Mass hysteria is defined as “an outbreak of unusual and uncharacteristic behaviors, thoughts and feelings, or health symptoms shared among a group of people” (Raypole). In the play there are multiple ways that mass hysteria is shown throughout the different acts. The events in The Crucible by Arthur Miller were deeply rooted in mass hysteria such as when Abigail was in the courtroom, when Betty woke up and started shouting names, and when there were poppets found in Proctor’s house.
In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, hysteria is being spread throughout the puritan community of Salem. Abigail is the main reason for all of this, with her lies and her persuading her friends to follow along with the lies and blaming others. The historical setting, characters, and events have shown us hysteria throughout the play and how the people of Salem handle the feeling of being in constant fear. As we read the play it is easy to see that hysteria causes people to jump to conclusions.
To demonstrate, she urges Proctor :” No you cannot break charity with your minister…clasps his hand and make peace”(Miller 31). She tries to help Proctor and Parris reconcile, rather than arguing with the others. She listens to both sides properly and tries to bring a compromise. When she is accused, Rebecca confronts the charges upon her.
“Why, it is a lie, it is a lie; how may I damn myself? I cannot I cannot.” Rebecca Nurse, a character from The Crucible, is on the verge of being condemned to hand for witchcraft and is being pressured into admitting her identity. Rebecca is a married women to Francis Nurse. She is a kind, religious woman who has raised eleven wonderful children.
What if the most loved and cared for people were punished and killed because of a girl trying to cover up her own mistakes she made, but created an even bigger one by doing so. A girl named Abigail Williams went against the law along with many other girls and practiced witchery, knowing you could be killed for it. Once confronted, she took many innocent people down along with her, in hopes of covering her mistake up. By doing so, she created a mass hysteria in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts, just to save her own life. A thought out plan containing selfish acts, manipulation and hatred created a tragic mess in a once beloved town.
One of the most powerful human emotions is desire. Everyone is constantly trying to fulfill their own desires. A desire or passion may be so strong it can conflict with morality. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams, is driven to go against her moral duty and pursue John Proctor. She will stop at nothing to see her plan through.
Abigail, Betty, and Rebecca are the three women who were involved in all the lies and accusations. Betty saw everything that happened, and is frightened over the fact that Abby and Rebecca were dancing over a fire. Betty say’s “You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife” (Miller
Abigail is clearly a sociopath, and cannot be considered insane because of this. The difference between insanity and a sociopath is that sociopaths are aware of what they are doing: lying, manipulating and planning their actions to get what they want. Abigail lied to the whole town; making up these stories about witches and the devil in order to cover up her trying to use charms to kill Elizabeth Proctor:"You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!"
Corey mistakenly ends up raising suspicion of his wife’s connection to witchcraft, which ends up leading to her sentencing and being hanged. This mistake was a genuine one, but it was still a result of a patriarchal state of mind. A quote from The Crucible, “Martha, my wife. I have waked at night many times and found her in a corner, readin’ a book. Now what do you make of that?”
