Social rebellion has been a large part of today's modern culture, as children we tend to veer off into our own direction and into our own destiny. In the Novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the society we know and understand today is gone and in its place is a futuristic society of book burnings and false freedom. The main character Guy Montag undergoes a life changing reprogramming of how he thinks and acts after finding the true meaning of freedom. The novel begins with Montag doing his normal routine working as a fireman. Firemen are different than we know them today, they don't put out fires but start them in homes that have contraband in them. Calmly she and tells Montag that Clarisse had been hit by a car and died. Uneasy about this information and the prior night, Montag stays home from work the next day but gets an unexpected visit from Fire Chief Beatty. Beatty explains to Montag that books have been banned because new media, increased speed of society and minority groups fighting controversial references in the outdated books.( Bradbury, 59) Taking advantage of this situation the government created firemen to keep the public happy. With this new found knowledge about books Montag feels compelled to learn more about books and the meaning of self expression. Montag had once met a man named Faber who he felt could help explain the importance of books. Faber was an English Professors before they outlawed books, but unfortunately fails to explain the true meaning of books to Montag. Montag returns home to find his wife her friends watching the TV. Montag leaves his home and returns to the firehouse after a failed attempt to explain books to his wife and her friends(Bradbury,101). When he arrives, he joins a poker with his co-workers and talks. Suddenly the fire alarm goes off. They all climb into the truck making there way down the road. The truck pulls up to Montag's house, and he is forced to burn it down. As a child seeing something you hold so dear being destroyed in front of your eyes can impact you for the rest of your life. He also read about how 5000 years ago the city of Alexandria had held book burning destroying ancient books forever("An Interview with Ray Bradbury."). This impacted Bradbury's work because he was a self educated man, and was taught everything he knows by his mentors (books), he was afraid that if America started burning books his teachers would die. When Bradbury started to write his book, he had escaped all other distractions, including his wife and two load kids at home. Bradbury had discovered a rental typing machine in the basement of the UCLA Library. Renting the typewriter for 10 cent a half hour pushed bradbury even harder to finish the book as soon as possible("An Interview with Ray Bradbury."). In only 10 day bradbury had finished what is considered to be his greatest work of literature. In an interview bradbury was asked why is it important to read books. He replies “Because we are trying to solve the mystery of our lives, no matter what kind you have. Quite often there's an end to it and you have to find a new love. We move from novel to novel.”( Bradbury, "An Interview with Ray Bradbury."). It is believed that novels books, and stroies can influence who you are as a person whether you are a lost teen
