I have grown as an academic student in college and career readiness, as displayed through my English 101 class. This was my third college class on the campus of Los Angeles Mission College, so I thought I was prepared and ready. Yet in my English 101 class I had to come up with my own prompts for my essays and merely came into class to listen to lectures on the basics of English. This was the first class that the teacher did not give me the rules on what to do for the assignment, I had to come up with it myself. Professor Diaz-Cooper did not hand out How-To papers or grading rubrics - she expected us to know and acquire all this information on our own.

When I first began online classes for English, I quickly started learning techniques that I needed to keep up throughout the semester. Each assignment and essay is due at midnight, therefore starting or finishing an assignment early allows the writer enough time to turn in the assignment. Throughout the five modules, I have learned how to write an argument and rhetorical analysis, conduct research and write an exploratory essay. In each module, I learned writing techniques and skills that I never knew before.

English 101 was a class that I put off taking my first semester because I knew that this was one of my weakest subjects. As time moved on, my skills improved, even though I always dreaded taking this class, because I had a fear of writing bad papers. I chose to have a positive attitude an open mind about my writing assignments to get the best outcome. I learned to be more organized and set time aside to read the book, write down the key points that I want to address to my paper, then analyze what I’ve written. Nevertheless, by doing this, it helped me to make the appropriate changes when it came time to submit my final drafts.
Throughout this course, I’ve written a variety of essays starting from Approaches to a Written Argument, Personal Essay, Academic Argument Essay and Process Reflection essay. I’ve learned a great deal of information between these four essay. I’ve learned that most of the time when you write a college essay, it’s going to need to be written in APA format and if it’s not in APA format you can get serious points taken off of your grade. APA format has to be set up in a specific, from the title page to a reference page and APA must have a reference page, because it’s considered plagiarism when you’re not giving credit to the author who you’re quoting from. I’ve also learned about the I.C.E method.

The Driscoll model of reflection gives a framework for reflective writing, allowing ideas and situations to be analysed and interpreted for personal and professional growth and development (Bostock 2015), therefore I have applied this approach in reflecting upon my experience in the group presentation. What? The beginning of our group presentation started with a conversation where we all gave our opinions and ideas on what we could do the presentation on and how we would go about it.
Throughout my time in Writing 101, the learning outcome to which I directed my focus is Exploration and Argumentation: Students will use writing and other modes to analyze text, explore unfamiliar ideas, engage with thinking different from their own, develop sound arguments, and reflect. I consider this outcome to be the most significant in my learning experience because of how it has led me to become a more enlightened and open-minded writer, rather than one that dives directly into flaunting my own opinion. Although I still occasionally find myself oblivious to alternate viewpoints, working towards this learning outcome taught me how to familiarize myself with a topic before forming an opinion, be more accommodating to alternate opinions, and to be a more considerate writer overall. Whenever students study a book in school, their teachers expect them to learn something—a big take away, a life-changing idea, a new perspective that sheds light on solutions to all the world’s problems. In many ways, The Lively Art of Writing by Lucile Vaughan Payne was not that book. It was, however, a very useful read that revealed many valuable tips and tricks of the writing trade that all students ought to know. I found some tips dull, some tips easy, and some greatly influential. Personally, the three most useful topics were paragraph hooks, the size and shape of the middle paragraphs, and the sound of the sentences.
