Morals define who we are and what we believe in. Knowing between right and wrong is a good cornerstone to prepare one’s good morals. There are many factors that contribute to shaping one's morals for example one’s family can influence their morals they can provide many opportunities to learn, experience, and freedom. Another example is that one's religion can heavily contribute to one's moral. In To Kill a Mockingbird there’s many characters that has his/her own religious views that define their moral. Jem is a prime example of one's moral growth. Jem is the first born of his family and is the only boy. He’s later joined by Scout his younger sister. Jem really depends on his father Atticus, Atticus was the main influence in Jem's life besides Calpurnia his housekeeper and Jem doesn’t like to disappoint Atticus since he has so much respect for him.

This happens when Atticus loses the trial of Tom Robinson and jem is really hurt by this. He starts losing faith in the goodness of people and starts to really mature, he starts to realize really how the the people of Maycomb are and this is a major part of his moral growth of growing up. A direct quote that supports this is when Jem says “I always thought maycomb folks were the best folks in the world, least that’s what they seemed like” (Lee 219).
