Revenge isn’t always the answer but some seek it when wrong is done to them. Revenge is getting back at someone, some call it “payback” or “karma”. The Crucible uses many different forms of revenge from characters that have a connection to each other or even none at all. In this play revenge plays a big part and since revenge isn’t good idea, There’s a lot of consequences that will come along with it. In Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” he had many characters trying to get revenge on someone else in the play, such as Abby, Proctor, and Putnum.
As in the thesis, revenge is mostly what The Crucible is about, But different ways of plotting revenge is the key of the play. The character that put their all into getting”payback” was Abigail. Abigail affair with John Proctor created a lot of problems. Proctor’s wife sent abby on her way and she envy her since then. This what started her plot of revenge. “She wants me dead John ,You know it… She thinks to take my place”(Act Two.Pg 1127). Abigail framed Elizabeth Proctor for witchcraft. Also Abigail charged Elizabeth for creating a voodoo doll to stab her with a needle. John Proctor didn’t take the police taking his wife away very well and he knew he had to seek revenge. Proctor told abigail he would never touch her again and that he wanted his wife. When he realized what she was doing to his wife, he knew what he had to do. “Abigail were stabbed tonight, a needle were found stuck in her belly.. Elizabeth: and she charges me? Hale: Aye” (Act Two Pg.1133). It tells who abigail accused of stabbing her and it all falls together. Why would Abby accuse Elizabeth after John told her he didn’t want her anymore? she planned the whole thing and John knew
