First of all, I found an evidence at the beginning part of the story, when the girls were still in St. Bonny’s. Quote unquote. This small part of the story made me think that Twyla and her mother were black immediately. I think so because I noticed that Roberta’s mother refused to shake Twyla and Mary’s hand. Moreover, considering the background information that back in those days, the 50s, there was still mass amount of racial segregation going on in America.
Recitatif Tony Morrison uses racial tension in Recitatif by presenting Twyla and Roberta while never pronouncing which is which race and using instances such as Maggie and de-segregation to illustrate racism during this time period. This makes for a very confusing read as it shows racial tension that presents itself at the beginning of the story and continues to progress throughout. “White audiences read each stereotype as black and black audiences read each stereotype as white.”(Web) In the beginning, Twyla and Roberta are eight years old and left in an orphanage for abandoned girls named Saint Bonaventure, which the girls called St. Bonnys.

Inspiration and Rewriting: ““Recitatif”” and “The Thing in the Forest” In both stories, two little girls are the main character of the story, they both have a strong bond that enforces their strength throughout the story. ““Recitatif”” written by Toni Morrison is a short story that revolves about the lives of two young, Twyla and Roberta girls that meet each other in an orphanage after they were taken away from their mothers due to the lack of parenting care they needed. As the story goes, they grow up an find their selves together again, but the worriment from their past starts to haunt them. Two other girls older than them had pushed a mute woman down the stairs.
Now that the names have been presented it’s time to connect how the characters' names play a part in knowing the characters' identity opposed from knowing their self. In “Recitatif” , the narrator Twyla talks about her past. It is important that she is narrating the story because she thinks back at her time at St. Bony’s, an orphanage she and her friend Roberta had to stay at. She remembers when she first met Roberta and remembers how her mother would not like her being in the same room as her. Twyla refers to herself and Roberta as ‘salt and pepper’, telling the reader that they are both different races.
