Throughout life, people sacrifice many things for the ones they love; whether it’s time, their dreams, or even their life. Sacrifice is a theme very potent in both the film Destino and throughout the Harry Potter series, especially in the last two books, which is why by comparing Destino to the Harry Potter series, audiences understand that people make sacrifices in order to keep the ones they love and society happy. Within Destino, time was an undecided reality; different scenes were combined into one endless film. In several occurrences, the woman closes her eyes to begin picturing her life as a dancer. Early on in the film, the woman stands in front of a statue and shuts her eyes. Inside of her dream, she hugs the statue until it disappears into her heart. Her mind takes her to another thought where she dreams that a man would be released from the statue so she can be with him. Dark then turns to day as she dances up a huge tower, in drastic hopes she would find the man. She comes to the tough conclusion that she will have to give up her dream of dancing, to be with the man she loves. From the other perspective, the man also has a dream; his being a professional baseball player. He too values the woman but is unwilling to sacrifice his dream for her. In the Harry Potter series, Harry has a dream to become an Auror, which is a dark wizard catcher. In the sixth book Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince and the seventh book Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Harry has to put those aspirations aside. In Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, Harry is tasked with finding out the key to killing Voldemort and he has to balance that with finishing out the school year. Harry is way more focused on finding out the secret to finding out how to kill Voldemort and he can’t really focus on school as much as he would like to. The spectrum of characters in the film isn’t especially vast, yet the woman’s sacrificial actions are far greater than the man’s. Her initial sacrifice starts with her assuming the shape of a bell; she does this to enter the man’s world of fantasy. The following major sacrifice occurs when the woman’s head turns into a flower. She leaps around, dancing as gracefully as a swan, while parts of the flower are released from her head. One of the petals floats over to the man as a part of the soft wind and shows him where the woman is waiting. The man must now make a sacrifice, that which he is unwilling to do. With that, he continues pursuing his beloved career of baseball, until he sees the woman again. This time, she is dressed up as a dancer. Her head turns into a baseball, and she throws it at him. This is the third sacrifice given by the woman. The message here is that she is willing to give up a part of her life, dancing, to help him achieve his dream of baseball. In Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Lord Voldemort and his followers lead an attack on the castle of Hogwarts in an attempt to get to Harry, who is putting together the last pieces to kill Voldemort. In the middle of the attack, Voldemort pulls back his followers and sends out a warning to all of the witches and wizards in Hogwarts; “I speak now, Harry Potter, directly to you. You have permitted your friends to die
