Self-sacrifice can be defined as an individual gives up his own interest for satisfying the needs of others. When an individual faces a compelling circumstance, he steps on others to help himself to gain prestige and position for himself while leaving those stepped on in the dust. An individual who benefits from other’s sacrifice is more willing to embrace the idea of sacrificing others. It may not cause worry or guilt immediately. However, the guilty feeling of sacrificing others keeps an individual awakes at night and struggles to redeem himself. After Amir meets with Rahim Khan and knows the fact that Hassan’s son, Sohrab, was in the orphanage, it is time for him to seek redemption. Amir decision of bring Sohrab to Pakistan is because of not only Rahim Khan’s request but also a way to be good again. It is his first active step he takes towards atoning for his past and it demonstrates Amir’s first conscious decision to think of another before himself, even it means risking everything he has, including his life and the welfare of his family. Amir now understands that he can endeavour to gain redemption by sacrificing himself to rescue Sohrab. As Amir continues to find Sohrab and tries to save him from Assef, he is willing to sacrifice himself for a chance to get Sohrab back. In his mind, it is his turn to pursue his quest to atone for precedent sins he has carried throughout his life by sacrificing himself and saving his half nephew from a war-ravaged home. The confrontation represents the stand that Amir finally can risks his life to fight for others. Eventually, the fight leaves a permanent scar on his lip. This symbolizes that Amir has become willing to self-sacrifice for those he cares about, as Hassan once did for him, and so Amir can find some redemption in the injury. For Amir, rescuing Sohrab is only the beginning, not the end, of what he must do. Amir lets Sohrab smiles again by running the kite for Sohrab just as Hassan ran his last kite for him half a century before. He pushes himself into a “servant’s” position. Through Amir’s self-sacrifice, hope for the future is restored. Amir can stand up for others and he is willing to sacrifice himself for protecting his family.
