Odysseus still is a married man to Penelope and they have a young son that he wants to get back to and be with them. Calypso has held Odysseus to for seven years trying to marry him and sleep with Odysseus and she has given everything to Odysseus that he desires. Odysseus has a son that he wants to get back to and a wife that needs him. Odysseus has enough courage to try to leave the island when Hermes helped Odysseus escape.
Sacrifice can reveal what people value the most in their life. In the book The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Celie sacrifices her childhood, her education, and her freedom for her sister Nettie. Across cultures and civilizations, the sea has always been an important figure both in the benefits it provides in daily life and its presence in storytelling. In consequence, sea monsters have been important figures in myths and stories whether it be in 1000 BCE Babylonian culture, or in 20th century America. The Babylonian Enuma Elish and Disney’s 1989 The Little Mermaid both feature a powerful female antagonist, Tiamat and Ursula, respectively, and these two figures bear many similarities. In both stories, the female antagonist holds strong relationship to the sea, and has supernatural abilities that aid her in her quest to defeat the heroic characters in the story.
The Little Mermaid is all about coming of age. In other words Ariel the main character of the story believes that she is old enough to do as she pleases. Ariel loves going to the surface. On the other hand her dad didn’t want any humans to lay eyes on her, as a result of him thinking that they are barbarians. All Ariel wants is to do what she wants when she wants.
Growing up, I always loved problem solving and being near the ocean, at the University of Michigan, I can combine these two things into a career. With one of the top Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering programs in the country, Michigan would allow me to learn from the best and connect with alumni who are doing my dream job. In the future, I would love to design small sailboats which would make it easier for people to circumnavigate the world and leave less of an impact on the environment. At Michigan, I think this dream could become a reality. With the help of the professors and research opportunities at the university, I would learn everything I would need to know in order to be successful after graduation.
