In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” the characters make many sacrifices, and, through these sacrifices, pieces of their personality and character are brought into the metaphorical limelight.
First, Janie’s grandmother makes a sacrifice; the sacrifice of a comfortable life for herself in exchange for a better and safer future for Janie. She made many such sacrifices. For example, choosing a “good husband” for Janie, potentially sacrificing Janie’s ‘friendship,’ respect, and control over her own life.
Second, Janie sacrifices her safe, happy, and comfortable life with her first husband to run off with a younger man, whom she later helps to start a small town, and who also becomes the mayor of aforementioned small town. In doing this,

It is why we write books; to tell the tales we wish were our own, but sadly, disappointedly, will never be. We idealize ourselves in our characters, we project our personalities, our thoughts, our emotions, into the characters on the page, the ink our medium of imagination. We write stories, imagining ourselves to be the perfect heroes we write about.
However, as we see at the end of “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” fate is a fickle mistress, and romantics like Janie don’t get their “happily-ever-afters.” They get burned, broken, and lost. The higher our aspirations, the harder we hit the ground when we inevitably fall. The more we hope, the more those hopes are shattered.
