The Handicapper General was proud that all citizens living in 2081 were equal. In the beginning of the text, the narrator states”...and everybody was finally equal”(Vonnegut 13). This quote shows that the Handicapper General controls people in order to make them equal to each other. No citizen was smarter. No citizen was stronger. This reveals that the government wants the citizens to be equal. The government worked on making all people equal in order for there not to be any differences. Since all people were equal ”nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else”(Vonnegut 13). This quote reveals that nobody is different. This is why the Elders created Sameness. Sameness is when people are all the same and there isn’t anything imperfect about anyone. In the text it states, “The rules say that If there’s a third transgression, he simply has to be released.”…(Lowry 11). This quote explains that nobody can be imperfect. If you're born too small, or look alike, you’ll be released. In my direct quote, it’s talking about how if a newborn isn’t equal to others, They will be released. If there’s twins, the smaller twin will be released. in other words Killed. This reveals that in these communities, they want society to be perfect. They don’t want imperfection and only people to be equal. “it’s just the pills. You’re ready for the pills, that’s all. That’s the treatment for stirrings.” Once a child or adult starts to get a stirring, meaning a dream, they will be assigned pills to take to prevent that. This quote helps support my thesis because the governments or person in charge didn’t want anyone to have something someone else
