Women today are able to receive the education they want and build their own career. However, they do not have the full equality due to men getting paid higher than women along with women getting paid higher than others based on their racial background. Will women ever get paid the same as men do? Or will women continue to be paid less than men?
While women make up half of today’s workforce, they make seventy-nine cents to every dollar a man makes ("Pay Equity & Discrimination." — IWPR. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Sept. 2016.). To put it in perspective, for every $60,000 a man makes, a women only makes $47,400. The Equal Pay Act of of 1963 prohibited companies from determining pay based on the gender of the worker.
In the U.S., intersectionality is highly prevalent. For example, men with children have better chances of getting a job and receiving a larger compensation than women with children (Steinem 2014). The notion that men get paid more than women should not be new to anyone, and the idea that women with children are somehow less qualified than men with children is astonishing. This mindset may also support the glass ceiling issue that some women still face. Equal pay continues to be an ever-challenging uphill battle for women in the U.S. today.

So many people have had issues with this wage gap, people with different colored skin to what gender they are. There are women who will get paid 75% of what men get paid just because of their jobs or because people think that they should get paid less because they get stuck with the housework or they are taking care of the elders. To me that is ridiculous, women and men shouldn’t be getting paid the way people see them. Most people think that men have harder jobs and women get the easier jobs but, that isn’t always true.

But now that I understand the term I realized that I too, assumed that all women in America were concern with the pay wage gap between men and women. In most careers, women make much less money than men do for doing the same exact job. I thought all women prioritized this awful pay wage gap until I realized that I prioritize this unequal pay gap because I am a Caucasian female but, for instance, an African American woman may prioritize the injustices she may face while trying to get employed over the unequal pay gap. In the article, Study: anti-black hiring discrimination is as prevalent today as it was in 1989, German Lopez stated that, “The researchers found that anti-black racism in hiring is unchanged since at least 1989… The bottom line is whether you get a job in America can come down to your race” (Gomez, 2017).
With equal pay, poverty would decrease by more than a half. Supporting evidence from the President and CEO of the IFWPR, Dr. Heidi Hartmann, is “ Providing equal pay to women would have a dramatic impact on their families. The poverty rate for all working women would be cut in half, falling to 3.9 percent from 8.1 percent. The very high poverty rate for working single mothers would fall by nearly half, from 28.7 percent to 15.0 percent, and two-thirds would receive a pay increase.” (Clark, Hartmann, & Hayes, 2014, p.1) It is important to notice here that how much of humankind living in indigence would gain from this.
COMMENT ON THE RELEVANCE OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE AND HIS WORKS TODAY Last year the world celebrated William Shakespeare's 450th birthday and next year will mark the 400th anniversary of his death. It is now up to me to answer the question on how big the relevance of his person and his works still is today, which is a difficult task since I am neither very interested in him, nor have I read any of his plays. Women should request a twenty percent pay increase to even up the gender pay gap. In most jobs women earn eighty cents for every dollar a man earns for the exact same job. Employers should pay good, qualified women, who can competently perform their job duties, the same wages they pay men for the same work. Earning twenty percent less is a significant amount and it adds up over time. Throughout the years the pay gap has narrowed but it’s still not equal pay for equal work.
Besides white women being paid less than men, more culturally diverse people are being paid even less than them. A USA today article on the gap says “The numbers were even worse for women of color, with black women earning 68% of what was paid to white men and Hispanic women’s pay amounting to just 62% of their white male peers, according to the IWPR.” click here for link. That is crazy considering segregation has ended, at least so we thought. Not only culturally diverse women, but all women are being paid less than men.
Women face getting treated differently, lower paying positions, the opinions of men, and the idea that because they are women they are not capable of the same kind of work men are capable of. The more people that support the different movements for women’s rights the better chance of this issue becoming more well known. Although some may know the struggle women go through to be compared as equally to men, there is still room for more to learn about this issue.
