Sickness was a frequent issue throughout the book of Frankenstein. Death was considered common and people were used to living their lives surrounded by diseases. Sickness brings the feelings of death and sadness, adding to the atmosphere that is portrayed throughout the novel. Illness also leads to separation from society. All through the book Victor Frankenstein becomes seriously ill in several occasions that were not all tied together. The reason of him keep getting sick is to show the readers that Victor's death is approaching. Everytime he became sick he was sick for up to one month or more, it took him awhile to fully recover. "A fever succeeded to this. I lay for two months on the point of death-" (Pg 181). Mary Shelley illustrates Victor as a weak and helpless as he became sick after all the tragic and terrible events that happened in his life. Victor did not happen to be the only one that was affected by illness, it happened to all the people he deeply loved. He lost them all, one by one. The same thing happens after the death of his friend Clerval, who was killed by the monster that Victor created. Additionally, another health breakdown is what eventually kills Victor once he is found by Walton on the ship. Illness is the sign of Victor's mind and this shows us how he is so weak and vulnerable.
