Throughout the entire novel, the author’s use of literary devices is very clear. These literary devices, specifically similes and personification, help the reader get a better idea of the exact sounds and feelings which will allow them to know what it feels like to be there in that moment. “ I stood there, trying to think of a comeback, when suddenly, I heard a whooshing sound, like the sound you get when you open a vacuum-sealed can of peanuts. Then the brown water that had puddled up all over the field began to move. It began to run toward the back portables, like someone pulled the plug out of a giant bathtub.
Without literary devices, the stories you read would be dull and uneventful. This is why Richard Connell effectively uses similes and imagery in “The Most Dangerous Game” to help give it life. In this story, Connell used similes to give the reader a feeling of how things looked or felt. On page 19 the author wrote “...but it was like trying to see through a blanket” (Connell).

Imagine a dystopian future where brainwashed people are made to believe in a biological standard of beauty. Imagine another world where the events of World War One have been altered to include fabricated beasts and steampunk-like machines. Scott Westerfeld has created these worlds with his distinct style. His style is clearly evident in Uglies and Leviathan.. Westerfeld’s style is made up mainly of simile, imagery, and characterization through a character’s thoughts.
Everyone has heard the saying “everything in moderation” at least once in their lives. Usually this is applied to common things such as sweets, or time spent watching TV, but, it can also be applied to more serious issues. Ray Bradbury, the author of The Veldt, takes it in a more serious direction when two spoiled kids' parents face a difficult situation that turns deadly. Bradbury uses foreshadowing and symbolism to give the reader a shocking example of what can happen when too much of what seems to be a good thing takes over and turns deadly. Ray Bradbury uses a very strong example of foreshadowing to develop the notion that too much of something can be very bad.
By using similes, symbolism, and parallelism, the author uses fly fishing to represent the cycle of life. During the story, Maclean uses various similes to compare the river with life and family. Ray Bradbury uses several craft moves throughout his dystopian story names ‘The Veldt’. Using imagery, foreshadowing, and irony; Ray Bradbury enriches the story with these varying craft moves. Each is used to place the setting and feel of the story in the readers’ minds. Imagery is a craft move that was used to detail important areas in the story and help sell the scene Bradbury is creating to the reader. This is used to build a mood; one in particular is suspense.
In “The Veldt”, by Ray Bradbury, the Hadley family (especially the children), are spoiled, which leads to extremely negative consequences. The children are especially spoiled because of the part of the house they love and obsess over most, the nursery. This is not an ordinary nursery, though. Whatever you think of while you’re in the nursery comes to life. Because of this, whenever these spoiled brats don’t get what they want, they do more that just throw a major tantrum.
The Gilded Age. A point in history where industries took advantage of their workers and lied to the government about it. Men, women, and children alike were extremely undervalued. Whether it was low pay, long hours, or unsafe work environments people in this time were not being treated as they should have. In theory as years go by things will change.
Ray Bradbury’s, The Whole Town’s sleeping, is about a woman Lavinia Nebbs, who is going to the theatre with her 2 friends, Francine and Helen. On their way, they find a dead body, which was their other friend Eliza Ramsell’s. Assuming it was the anonymous serial killer, nicknamed “The Lonely One”, they call the police. After the theatre trip, the friends head home. However, Lavinia senses someone is following her.
In The Veldt, the same thing happens within a dialogue on the second page of the story. There's a sense that the “nursery” is not what it seems to be when the wife from the story asks, “Did you hear that scream?” she asked. “No.” “About a minute ago?”
Ray Bradbury used symbolism, similes, and metaphors in The Veldt, in order to allow the family’s true colors to break the surface. Having multiple forms of symbolism allowed readers to let their imagination wander into how they interpreted the story and its meaning. The metaphors and similes handed readers something easy to compare the story to. Overall, Ray Bradbury’s excellent use of author’s craft made the short story interesting and fun to dive into.
one of the many times he uses imagery throughout this story is when the narrator says, “on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows” (Pg 1). By using imagery to compare walking through the neighborhood as walking through a graveyard shows that it is completely silent and there is no activity in any of the houses. Most people wouldn't describe their neighborhood as a graveyard, this also develops the mood. Another time he uses imagery is when the narrator says, “The street was silent and long and empty, with only his shadow moving like the shadow of a hawk in mid-country” (1). This shows mood because the narrator describes him as a hawk in mid-country, that means that he is all alone in what he feels to be like a barren or abandoned place.
