Captivating the Audience
In 1741, Jonathan Edwards gave his most famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” What surprised many people was the fact that he spoke quietly with no emotion for six hours. He must have spoken in such a way that captivated his audience. Edwards used many forms of figurative language to catch the attention of the congregation in Enfield, Connecticut. Three of the most common forms in this piece are similes, personification, and metaphors. Jonathan Edwards uses similes to compare unlike ideas.
