Madison Barr Mr. Clever ENG lll 4/20/2023 Fahrenheit 451 Essay Social Issues have been a hard topic since the beginning of time. Everybody has their own opinions on them. Fahrenheit 451 is a book that was written by Ray Bradbury in 1953. The book is supposed to represent the future. It is not perfect, but it has many social issues as we do. The modern United States of America is similar to Fahrenheit 451 because of suicide, technology obsession, and government control. To begin, suicide is mentioned in the book. “ ‘Mildred!’... The small crystal bottle of sleeping tablets which earlier today had been filled with thirty capsules and which now lay uncapped and empty in the light of the tiny flare” (Bradbury 11). This quote from Fahrenheit 451 tells us that Mildred tried to overdose. Modern-day society also has suicide issues. “Researchers found that between 2015 and 2020, there was a 27% increase in overdose suicide or attempted suicide among U.S. children and teenagers” (Norton). In the book, we see firemen who burn books because they think technology is all they need. Technology has made the citizens in the story so obsessed, it has them burning books. Modern-day technology obsession is all around the World. “ ‘A lot of people have developed such severe problems with gaming,’ she said. ‘They stay up all day and game for 24 hours, and there is evidence that they are dropping out of school; they are losing their jobs; they are losing their families’ ” (Booth).
