There are many different and unique jobs in modern society, each job requiring specific skills and traits that people may or may not have. One job that requires patience, peacefulness, and tact is a Spy, specifically an Inside Spy. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick, one of the main characters and the narrator would fit as an Inside Spy for his modern-day career. This is because of his ability to blend in, gather information, stay calm in dangerous situations, and spy on others. Firstly, in the novel, there are a lot of instances of Nick consistently blending into the spaces around him, not being noticed or seen until he makes himself known. Nick decides to phone the news of Gatsby to West Egg Village, where a spy role would play the higher power, the government or FBI agents, the residents have countless questions about Gatsby that were all directed towards Nick. Spies are usually responsible for their intelligence officer, as the duty goes both ways, if either one gets caught, the other one is in immediate danger. Nick realizes, “it grew upon me that I was responsible because no one else was interested — interested, I mean, with that intense personal interest to which everyone has some vague right at the end” (Fitzgerald 125). At the end of the day, the FBI has authority over the actions of intelligence officers and their spies, making the whole business a sort of hierarchy. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, “The FBI is the lead agency for exposing, preventing, and investigating intelligence activities, including espionage, in the U.S.” (Wray), this means that when the West Egg Village asks about Gatsby, the inside spy, or Nick is responsible for relaying that information so it can be dealt with accordingly, and in some cases, it’s the opposite, with the Intelligence officer, or Gatbsy relaying the information to the FBI on behalf of the
