Slide 2: How have shows and movies about teenagers through different time periods impacted how real teenagers have changed? How teenagers are seen in movies and TV shows has changed significantly over past decades to what fits with the current stereotypes and standards. The first time that being a teenager was ‘popularised’ was during the 1950s, when youths aged 13-19 wanted to be unique, and unlike the older generations. They turned to rock and roll music, younger television shows, and movies to distance themselves from being involved with the culture of their parents. This compared to teenagers in the 80s and 90s when there was a large uprising of rebellion and angst.
S. E. Hinton started to write her book The Outsiders when she was 14 years old in the 1960s. The novel takes place in Tulsa Oklahoma during the 1960s and focus around a teenager named Ponyboy Curtis. Tulsa is split in two parts where on one side the rich people live and the call them the Socs. On the other side all the poor people live and they are called the Greasers. Pony boy is a greaser and he lives with his two older brothers Sodapop and Darry because his parents died.
Stereotyping is a general idea that someone uses to view someone before they actually get to know them. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Jem, and Dill stereotype people until Scout’s father tells her to stop stereotyping. Harper Lee suggests that in order to fully understand someone, you must learn to see the world from their point of view. Mrs. Dubose is an example of Harper Lee’s idea because at first she acts mean towards the Finch family which cause Jem to destroy her camellia flowers. When Mrs. Dubose dies, Atticus tells the kids that the reason she was so mean was because she had a morphine addiction.
In Born A Crime, a common theme throughout the novel stereotypes are shown. Not only has Trevor Noah been a victim of stereotypes, but he has also been a contributor. Everyone is capable of stereotyping, it depends on whether or not they contribute to it or fight against it. Trevor Noah has learned to not stereotype after he had spent time in jail.
Society is built upon a grand scale of assumptions and misunderstandings, all of which tend to lead us in a path for the worst. Outsiders could be misjudged sometimes. Franklin acts constantly as bizarre and strange to some people. One of the greatest geniuses of America could be misjudged in the fact that we tend to avoid people we see as odd or strange and Franklin is very strange by today's standards. ” Some might argue that weird people are just plain weird” these people simply are misjudging what we see as strange. Although Franklin was a genius, he was not very popular because he almost never left home and most would avoid him.
Carl Jung, a swiss psychiatrist, once said that “Thinking is difficult, that's why most people judge.” (Jung and Jung) Bridge (Need to add: 2-3 sentences) Throughout the novels The Outsiders by S.E Hinton and Out of Nowhere by Maria Padian, the readers are able to learn from various misjudgments the characters face. In The Outsiders, Johnny Cade is misjudged to be a cold-blooded murderer when in fact he is a really good kid, leading the reader to learn that you cannot judge a book by its cover.
Class Stereotypes Stereotypes are seen as overgeneralized ideas, images, or beliefs of a person based on a group of people. Stereotypes can either be taken or said in a negative or positive way but mostly seen in a negative way. Stereotypes are formed on a life experience, idea or a belief a person may have towards one person based on the person’s gender, race, religion or social class. The most common stereotypes are of the social classes which are the: upper, middle and lower class.
This novel by S.E Hinton, The Outsiders shows a crucial point that everybody is special in some way and should be known as who they are individuality not as a group. The Outsiders is a book that describes 2 gangs , the luxurious Socs, and the hoodlum Greasers. While they have conflicts with each other, the protaganist, Ponyboy, finds his identity outside of the gang. The important message of the story is that everyone has a unique personality that are developed by being in a group of people away from home, this identity can shape anyone’s way of life and the path they may take in the future. First of all, Socs and greasers have a trademark that showed who was part of their gang, Socs are know for Mustangs, Madras, and leather jackets;

Stereotypes can be racial, religious, sexual and social. These could be the caused of a known incident or attitude years earlier, or simply the result of frequent rumors. Socs and greasers often stereotype each other just based on one experience with one their friends. To start off, there are many instances of greasers stereotyping Socs, but here are just a few examples. However, people soon realize that when you start to eat bananas that have more spots and are imperfect they turn out to be sweeter and better. This connects to stereotypes because people who follow stereotyped will always eat the perfect bananas; however, people who choose to look through another perspective can realize that the imperfect bananas are better. This connects to The Outsiders because Ponyboy realizes this after he talks with two Socs, kids from a rival group named Randy and Cherry. In The Outsiders, S.E Hinton presents the idea that teenagers can break through stereotypes if they look at life through another perspective; as shown in the book when Ponyboy starts to talk to Cherry and Randy and realizes the stereotypes about them are false.
The Socs live on the west side and are known as the west side rich kids who have all the breaks. People judge their personality just based on where they live, and what they look like. Stereotyping is an unfair way to judge people because you never know their whole story. It is wrong to judge someone just by who they hang out with. In The Outsiders, Cherry, a Soc, and Ponyboy, a greaser, start talking at a Drive-in movie.
Stereotype is an oversimplified idea or image about a certain group of people that is widely accepted by others. It is a “generalization” about a person or a group of person. A stereotype is the association of a person or a social group with a consistent set of traits. This may include both positive and negative traits. Media is criticized for creating stereotypes, but they are usually part of audience is way of thinking about the world anyway.
