In the movie The Secret Life of Bees, several examples of suffrage for African-American women in the south and interracial relationships were shown throughout the movie. The film takes place during the Civil Rights Movement, and the relationship between whites and African- Americans is a very rocky one. African Americans are still not being treated fairly and prejudice is still a major factor taking place. The movie begins with the main character Lily Owens tells the story of the day her mother was killed. Lily comes from an interracial family. Her late mother, Deborah is an African- American, and her father T-Ray is white. Like all families during this time period, men still had control of the household and could treat their wives and children
