In life, everyone has gotten the suspenseful feeling of being insecure or scared of something. In the novel, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, the characters are invited to Soldier Island for various reasons by the same person identified as Mr. Owen or U.N. OWEN. Upon their arrival to Soldier Island, they are greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Rogers who have announced to them that their host, “Mr Owen” is delayed and won’t arrive until tomorrow. By the end of the night, one of the guests is dead and slowly, each guest gets killed off. In “And Then There Were None,” Christie uses symbolism, foreshadowing and inner thinking to build suspense for the reader. During the beginning of the story, before they make it to the island, Mr Blore talks to a drunken man. “‘He’s nearer the day of judgement than I am!’ But there, as it happens, he was wrong…” (Page 17). This creates suspense because it suggests that Blore is going to die before that man and most likely shows that he is going to get killed. It foreshadows that he can die at anytime giving the readers an uncertain feeling about what is going to happen later in the book. Unfortunately, Anthony Marston is the first to die out of the ten guests. The remaining guests read the poem and it appears that Anthony Marston died the same way as the first soldier boy in the poem. “One choked his little self and then there were nine.” They state, “It's horrible - just like us this evening…” (Page 89).
