“Isla” by Virgil Suarez is a poem about an immigrant mother and son originally from the Caribbean island of Cuba living in Los Angeles. As mentioned in an article by Leslie P. Perez, Cuba is a communist country and its people suffer instead of being able to live in freedom. The United States government created a paper called the Cuban Refugee Adjustment Act (CAA). “This paper explores the notion that Cubans leave their country not only due to economic difficulties, but also in fear of unjust persecution and to protect their lives and fundamental liberties (Perez, L.P., 2016).”

According to Percy D’Aco, horror stories are created to show discomfort and fear reflecting on one’s greatest fears. In the process of writing horror stories, numerous authors create suspense to make people continue reading and stay hooked on the story. A great example of the use of suspense would be the horror story “August Heat,” written by W.F Harvey.

He makes suspense in reader mind by leaving few key points and making the reader guess or asking the question. This makes the reader want to know what’s going to happen and want to read the whole story.

In the short story, “The Lady, or the Tiger”, the author Frank Stockton describes a situation where the princess’s lover has been discovered and must face judgment by going to the arena and choose between two doors. He and the princess were not supposed to be together. The princess has the ultimate dilemma where one door has a tiger and the other has a lover. The princess is a vengeful, jealous character that tried to direct her lover to the door of the tiger.

The short story “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl is a great mystery because it has lots of suspense. In “The Landlady”, a seventeen year old boy named Billy Weaver has gone to London, and while searching for a place to stay, finds a bed and breakfast to stay for the night. But he didn’t decide to stay there, he was forced there. In the story, it states, “Each word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass, holding him, compelling him, forcing him to stay where he was and not walk away from that house, and the next thing he knew, he was actually moving across from the window to the front door of the house,” (Dahl, 2). In this passage, Billy is actually being pulled to the bed and breakfast by some unknown force.

Unfortunately, he arrives at the wrong place and that might involve getting him into trouble. In Roald Dahl’s short story ‘The Landlady, the author uses foreshadowing, characterisation, and irony to convey the idea that one should not take things as they seem. First of all, the author uses many examples of foreshadowing in the Landlady.
The suspense in the passage is her mother believing where she is and her walking into the creepy bookshop. The passage after is building suspense about the old man letting her buy the second book. The author does a great job of building suspense throughout the story and keeping the reader interested in what will happen next.
