Legalization of Marijuana

Throughout history, marijuana has been a topic which has been controversial due to its various psychoactive effects. The use of marijuana has been able to help individuals regarding medicinal purposes in order to control pain. However, marijuana is also used recreationally in order to reduce anxiety and receive a buzz of pleasure. Some individuals believe that marijuana can lead individuals to engage in bad activities, causing them to become a whole new different person. When using marijuana, it has helped people with various illnesses recover in a less painful way. Specifically, it is shown to be able to ease the pain related to medical conditions. For example, Source A expresses how “Some research has shown that using marijuana reduces the nausea and vomiting of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy” which is able to occur due to the cannabinoids in marijuana which is what helps reduce the pain. Marijuana can prevent the suffering one might feel from the painful medical conditions they are experiencing. Dr. Mirman, the medical director at life medical, began to observe the effects marijuana had on his patients when he prescribed it to them medically. He met a woman with Tourette's syndrome and was told how she was constantly experiencing having ticks and grunting in public, which was not the most acceptable. He prescribed her marijuana in order to help reduce what she was continuously experiencing. After she began taking marijuana, Dr. Mirman was able to observe how “Her tension went down and she was able to sit down during appointments calmly without twitching” (Source B). Marijuana was able to change this woman's life and reduce the tension she was constantly feeling from her syndrome. Due to COVID-19, there has been an increase in demands for jobs due to places shutting down. Therefore, many families have been struggling financially due to individuals not being able to work and provide for their families. However, according to an RCG Economics and Marijuana Policy group on Nevada, if marijuana became legalized, it “could support over 41,000 jobs till 2024 and generate over 1.7 billion in labor income” (Source F) which would be beneficial for people who lost their jobs during the pandemic. The jobs created for marijuana would be able to provide new opportunities which can benefit people in order to support themselves and others. Not only can legalizing marijuana federally help promote jobs, but The Congressional Research Service “projected that replacing cannabis prohibition with taxation and regulation could yield $6.8 billion in excise taxes alone” which would be transferred to the government in order to put it towards them and public purposes. Specifically, “In Washington State, taxes on cannabis sales brought in $600 million in 2020” (Source H) which is benefitting the incomes and sales occurring towards the states due to the tax revenue and funding services which are beneficial to the safety and well being of the citizens.
