In the novel A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, it was evident that Mallow's Hierarchy of Needs influenced the decisions Ishmael made to survive. For our book club I created a version of Mallow's Hierarchy using quotes from the novel. This helped me understand that one cannot attain self-actualization until the needs below it are met. Once Ishmael's physiological needs were not met he “started to feel weak”(Beah 45). To fulfill his needs, Ishmael and his friends, “stole people's food while they slept.
Ishmael has accept the fact that the war has ruined his enjoyment of meeting new people. Because of him going into villages and being chased out because they believed he was a rebel, Or having to go through other villages because he knew nobody there and he knew what was coming to their village and he did not want to stay had ruined the experience for him until later on in his life. Ishmael's experiences force him to deny his emotional side in order to survive. His flight from RUF attacks on the various villages in Sierra Leone requires him to let go of attachments to family and friends. Although he holds out hope to see his family, he has no choice but to close off himself to the world.
Children are not mature enough to be persecuted. Children are young, and we do not know what is in their mind sets. They can do crazy stuff. Ishmael craved marijuana, when he wanted it badly he would roll a sheet of paper and smoke it. Ishmael says in the book,” I craved cocaine and marijuana so badly that I would roll a plain sheet of paper and smoke it”.
The Struggles During Wartime The sierra Leone child soldier survivor Ishmael Beah. He had to deal with the separation of his family at twelve-years old, exposure to guns, violence and starvation,but, the worst of all was when he had to become a killer. One of the many struggles Beah had to deal with when he was a little kid was the exposure to gun and violence.

Hunting has been a part of our society since the first man set foot on this continent, but animal rights movements have become popular in our society recently that has questioned the necessity of hunting in our modern times. Is it right to kill those innocent creatures painfully? No. It’s not right to harm them for our own benefits. Every living soul have rights, this includes animals, and just because they can’t speak up for themselves doesn’t mean we can take that away from them. The fact that they can’t speak is a disadvantage, and it’s unethical for us to use their disadvantage against them for our own benefits.
The killing of animals, which causes pain is a definition of animal cruelty. To be precise, the terms apathy and empathy can be compared in the exhibition of harming animals. Apathy is one of the reasons why animal cruelty occurs. This is because others feel the pleasure in hurting animals instead of taking care of them due to psychological disorders. For instance, Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the many notorious psychopathic serial killers who torture animals for satisfaction.
