Harleen Kaur American Literature Eldridge-6 23 Feb 2023 Textual Analysis- Crucible The play “The Crucible by: Arthur Miller” gives very significant roles to all characters. All have an important role throughout the play. The characters follow through with their words no matter if it’s right or for all intents and purposes wrong; just to save themselves from the punishment. The play Crucible is written mainly on the Salem Witch Trials and how people would choose their reputations more over what was right. In this play living in a small town reputation really meant a lot especially if you had a high authority such as John Proctor. John Proctor was the protagonist of the play he was well respected and he knew what he was being accused of was pure wrong (messing with witchcraft) instead of admitting to it, and saving his life, he made a significant sacrifice. He did not want such a bad reputation following him, so instead of having a false accusation for the rest of his life, he decided it was best to end his life. Reputation as a whole throughout the play meant a lot. It was sort of a theme throughout the whole play.
