In the play “Hamlet”, there are many examples of the seven deadly sins. But, there are some sins that definitely stand out more than others. Some of those sins that stand out are Greed, Lust, and Envy. Throughout the play, a good majority of the characters show these sins, some times more than once. One of these characters is Claudius, and the main sin that he commits is Greed. At the beginning of the play, Claudius decides to kill his brother, the king, so he can have the throne, the king’s wife, etc. For example, when Claudius becomes king he says, “The memory be green, and that it us befitted, to bear our hearts in grief, and our whole kingdom” (Act 1 Scene 2). When Claudius was saying this, he was not sad in any way at all. He got what he wanted and didn’t regret it (at first). The greed that was in him forced him to kill his brother and take the throne. When Claudius was confessing about his sins, Hamlet had the perfect opportunity to kill him right there. But, right before he stabs him, he stops and thinks, “I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven, why this is hire and salary, not revenge” (Act 3 Scene 3). Before hamlet kills Claudius, he realizes something. He realizes that if he kills him them and there, he would be doing him a favor. Claudius was confessing at the time which means he was sorry for what he did. So if Hamlet killed him that would mean that he would get to go to heaven and Hamlet wouldn’t get his revenge.
