Over the course of the novel The Great Gatsby, the main character James Gatz, more commonly known as Jay Gatsby, lives the American Dream. Gatsby's life is filled with large- lavish parties, beautiful cars, and an enormous mansion on the Sound. Gatsby worked for this lifestyle by following his dream to better himself. This dream leads Gatsby to become corrupt. But Gatsby's American Dream has become corrupted because of a lack of reality.

In the first passage, Fitzgerald explores the unattainability of the American dream through the portrayal of the elites, including Gatsby, and their wealthy lifestyle. Gatsby’s privilege is depicted when he wased a ‘white card from his wallet’ in front of a policeman to escape the consequences of his reckless driving. This exemplifies how the elites’ wealth and power allow them to be reckless without worrying about the consequences. They declared that everyone shall have the right of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” With that, the American dream came to fruition.
Imagine yourself living in a nice house with a healthy family, an expensive car, lots of money, a good job, freedom, high social status, and achieving your goals all at once. That is what is considered the American Dream. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby tries to achieve this dream shown through Nick’s perspective. He lives in a mansion and throws huge parties quite often, but something always seemed to be missing to him. In fact, his house was empty, which only included him, his servants, etc.
In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are many important themes that help develop the meaning of the work as a whole. The most important and relevant theme throughout the novel would be the American dream. Jay Gatsby born as James Gatz came from a midwestern family that wasn't wealthy. Gatsby came into his own money which made him West Egg (pg. 98). When he was a soldier he met Daisy and that is when he wanted to be rich and have a lavish lifestyle because he liked Daisy and she was born into money.
