Shakespeare reveals through the tragic play Macbeth that disturbing the natural order and acting on free will will lead to complete anarchy. Lady Macbeth is a victim of free will as she meets her penance in Act 5. We see Lady Macbeth in Act 5 where she is so filled with guilt she cannot sleep due to hallucinations similar to Macbeth who also experienced these hallucinations after killing Banquo and Duncan. This state of moral vacuity contrasts her character in Act 1 where she had Machiavellian mentality. This guilt is what a Jacobean audience would see as Lady Macbeth’s penance as this is her punishment for disturbing the Great Chain of Being and committing regicide due to her vaulting ambition.
