Theocracy in Salem In the crucible by Arthur Miller, the people of Salem have a theocracy. A theocracy is when the laws and government are based closely upon the Bible. People are blinded by their beliefs and biases, which makes them blind to the awful things they do in the name of God. People living under a theocracy live in fear that they will be accused of witchcraft just because they upset someone or they missed church. The theocracy enhances the conflict of individual vs. society by the way that the people of Salem are prosecuted for being outsiders or being different. With no way out she states, “She made me do it” (40). Tituba did not in fact make her do it, but she was an easy target because she was a slave from Barbados and wasn't a church follower. Just because she looked different and acted differently, she was prosecuted for a heinous crime. While Tituba was being prosecuted, she expressed that she saw “goody good” (44). Tituba says Sarah Good’s name because she was like her–an outsider, someone who had no help, no one to defend her, someone easy to blame. The people of Salem are stuck in an endless loop of just blaming those who do not like them. Some people in Salem are blaming and prosecuting others for their own gain and using God as their reasoning. During the interrogation of Proctor's wife, he realizes what’s “ walking in Salem–Vengeance is walking in Salem” (73). Abigail is using God as a cover-up to prosecute Elizabeth, John Proctor's wife. Abigail wants John Proctor to herself, so she attempts to get rid of his wife by blaming her for witchcraft, and the people of the church cannot see the spiteful nature of the young woman and are blinded by God so they prosecute her. The people of Salem live in a theocracy, and this theocracy
