To Kill a Mockingbird Relevance to Today's Society To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee is an important novel that portrays the quality of life for people of color during the Great Depression. To Kill a Mocking Bird is a story about how a black man in Mackome Alabama was accused of raping a white woman. During this time period, society already lived by white supremacy and people of color did not have nearly the same amount of rights as whites. Tom was accused of raping Mayelle Ewell and hated amongst his community, although they had no real evidence to support this claim. Bob Ewell's racist view on Tom is relevant to those who still have racist views on people of color today. Society's views and treatment of Tom are relevant to how people of color still get treated today. The racism Tom received in his court case corresponds with today's corrupt judicial system. Children need to learn about racism and what happened in the past instead of being shielded from history. Even though it can be hard to learn about it's important so students know about the past. It's important that to Kill a Mockingbird is still taught in schools because it teaches students morals and values. It also teaches lessons from Atticus's perspective that everyone is a human no matter what they look like and who they are.
