In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece of literature “The Great Gatsby”, the eponymous character is shown to be an eccentric man with a shrouded past, which only becomes revealed to the reader in the final third portion of the book. Through his past, and many other subtleties laced into the book by Fitzgerald, it is heavily hinted at that Gatsby himself is African-American, being pale enough to pass as a white man in West Egg. The inklings of this idea are planted through this novel, both overt and symbolic, such as the geography laid out by Fitzgerald and characters’ placement in that, character interactions between Gatsby and harsh racists like Tom Buchanan, and Gatsby’s past that got him to West Egg and found him his fortune. Gatsby being black was a very hidden yet powerful statement by Fitzgerald on the upward mobility of African-Americans during the 1920’s when racism and racial violence were becoming extremely prevalent, and the lengths these people had to go to to achieve that mobility, with no guaranteed success.
Fitzgerald, an American author, in chapter two of his novel “The Great Gatsby” (published in 1925), claims that the rich Americans has the power to do whatever they wish. Fitzgerald made Tom Buchanan an unstoppable bully in this chapter; Tom uses his social status and physical strength to boss those around him, he taunts Wilson while having an affair with Wilson’s wife, he breaks Myrtle’s nose without hesitation, and most importantly, no one tries or dare to stop him. The characters in the novel are mostly mixtures of good and evil. Although the book does not clearly delineate the villains or heroes, there is one character who tends to stand out as a villain known as Tom Buchanan. Tom Buchanan is a major character in the book.
Shea Stuckey Schmit College English 05/08/23 Gatsby and Buchanan: Two sides of the same coin The book The Great Gatsby follows the story of a self-made wealthy man, Jay Gatsby, through the eyes of a middle class midwestern, Nick Carraway. Nick depicts Gatsby as a larger than life, mysterious, complex, and ultimately great man. Nick includes Gatsby’s 5 year long infatuation with Nick's cousin, Daisy Buchanan, while depicting Tom, Daisy’s husband, as a terrible, aggressive, uncaring man. While Nick's depiction of Tom is altogether not far off from the truth, Nick neglects and hides the similarities between Tom and Gatsby, while there are glaring differences between the two men, they are quite frankly two sides of the same coin.
In the novel The Great Gatsby there are many allusions to the bible, there are a number of times that the phrases and actions in the book relate to biblical stories and verses. For example the actions and motives of the main character Jay Gatsby all relates to bible verse Ecclesiastes 2;1-11.This novel reflects the chapter of Ecclesiastes with many symbols from main characters. In chapter 8 of this novel we are in Ash Town with George and Myrtle Wilson, George suspects his wife is hiding something from him and tells her "God sees everything," (Fitzgerald 103-106) as he points out the window to a billboard of Doctor TJ Eckleburg, this illustration of God is very small and could be looked over in this book for not really being significant.
In F. Scott Fitzgerald novel “The Great Gatsby”, the character George Wilson shoots Gatsby dead. But who is really to blame for his demise? Daisy Buchanan is the real person to blame because she lead gatsby to believe she would leave Tom for him and because she should have admitted to her mistakes. Daisy Buchanan plays her share in the blame for Jay Gatsby’s death because of the way she treated Gatsby. Daisy leads Gatsby on by letting him think she was gonna leave her husband while they run away together “... she realized at last what she was doing - and as though she had never, all along, intended doing anything at all” (132).

In Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, there are two characters by the names of Tom Buchanan and George Wilson. Throughout the book, these two particular characters seem to be very different from each other in nearly every way. However, it becomes clear as the story continues that they share some ideas and attitudes in common. Specifically, Tom and George were noteworthy in the way they felt about women, the methods by which they conveyed violence, and how they responded to their wives cheating on them.

This is used to describe Tom and Daisy Buchanan, the people responsible for Gatspys death. These characters appear in Fitzgerald’s American classic, The Great Gatsby. Daisy Buchanan was born into old money, narcissistic, and an old lover of Gatspys of whom he hasn’t gotten over yet. Tom is a violent entitled man who uses others for his own gain and will stop at nothing to prevent lose of control.
It is a given that every piece of work that people read will contain all sorts of characters. Those characters can range from villains, victims, or venerables. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, he very thoroughly presents each of those types of characters to his readers. Mr. Wilson matches the definition of a victim in this novel by the way people deceived him and lied to him the entire time, Nick Carraway presents himself as a venerable, otherwise known as an honorable character, due to his outstanding loyalty, and Daisy Buchanan, although not seen by most, is a villain because of her actions that cause detrimental issues.
Both tom Buchanan and George Wilson are two vastly different people but are alike in the most unusual ways. They are the only two characters in the book to use violence; both say they “love” Myrtle and both fight for their women only when they are about to lose them. That is where the similarities cease. Tom is the man who cheats on his wife daisy, with George 's wife Myrtle, and then proceeds to slap her when she would not stop speaking Daisy 's name. George, on the other hand, is a passionate and faithful husband to Myrtle and is crushed to learn that she was cheating on him so much so that he assassinates Gatsby whom he thinks was cheating with myrtle and murdered to get rid of the evidence of his adultery.

For as much as it is a story about the American dream, it is also a story about power under threat, and of how that power, lashing out, can render truth irrelevant” (Smith). In her article “How The Great Gatsby Explains Trump,” Rosa Smith illustrates how within Gatsby, the act of “lashing out” due to a surfeit of power is carried through by Tom Buchanan, the double-dealing antagonist of the novel. Tom demonstrates how power trumps all, and how when one possesses power, they have the capability to write their own truth.
Wilson’s POV: As I approached Gatsby’s estate, I felt God’s eyes following my every movement, beckoning me to avenge my beloved wife who was ripped away from me. I was going to take her somewhere safe, where she would no longer be pursued by other men, but I failed her, I failed Myrtle. The monster Gatsby may have thought that he could escape from his sins, stealing my wife and then throwing her away like garbage, but God saw everything, and he could not run forever. His inconsiderate actions have angered our Father, who did not approve of such a manipulative man with revolting hauteur. Gatsby lived like a king in his castle, protected by his wealth, and oblivious to the consequences of his actions.
In “The Great Gatsby” by F.Scott Fitzgerald, Tom Buchanan represents a man who is unfaithful, selfish, and arrogant. Throughout this essay, the character Tom Buchanan will be analyzed and will explain his purpose in this story as well as the many flaws he possesses which make him an unlikable person. Tom is considered to be the antagonist in this novel, but his main purpose in this story is to be the barrier between Daisy and Gatsby. Unbeknownst to Tom, Daisy eventually gets back with Gatsby but has a massive fit once he finds out they’re together.
