Have you ever wondered if this truly is the best thing I should be doing? In Mark Zusak’s novel, I Am the Messenger, there are many characters who have dilemmas of their own. Mark Zusak uses the signpost “Tough Questions" to create a very interesting novel. A novel that has the characters Ed Kennedy and Marv who seem to have no direction in life. When they are given the opportunity to drastically change themselves or somebody else's life they question if it will work out in a good way. The signpost “Tough Questions" is used to develop the characters in the novel. After receiving the gun in the mail Ed knew right away it was for the man of Edgar Street. Ed makes a plan which involves him tricking the man to get in his cab, drugging him, and then driving to the middle of nowhere so he can hold him at gunpoint. Ed's plan works, leaving him questioning if he has the courage to kill this man. Ed is well aware of all the horrible things this man has done and has to decide if he should end this person's life. Ed is contemplating all the possibilities saying to himself, “I’ll kill this man and also die myself, inside. I want to scream. I want to scream out asking why” (Zusak 89). Ed even poses the question of, “What would you do if you were me?” (Zusak 89). He runs through all the possible endings making this a really “Tough Question” for himself. Murder is something anyone would never want to do but after Ed watched this man hurt his family many times and the fact he is still facing the pressure that the man sending him the cards will hurt him if he does not complete the murder, are big factors which influences Ed decision and makes it hard for
