Discomforting truth behind Orgon’s trust for Tartuffe To better understand, one has to have a complete understanding of Tartuffe’s character thus comprehending the trust that is given unto him by Orgon. Tartuffe’s Looking at the relationship of Orgon and his family, it is without a doubt that there is complete lack of trust among the family members thus leading to different family members picking sides. For example, within the family we recognize Madame Pernelle’s visit to her son whereby she criticizes all family members only aiming to praise Tartuffe. Tartuffe is a hypocrite, who appears to be what he is not and uses that particular trait to feign virtues in the presence of Orgon. Orgon at some point appeared to be telling Cleante of how her heart had surrendered to Tartuffe just Orgon himself. Orgon further goes to tell Cleante of a story how he met Tartuffe at a church and what he did for him. For example Orgon says to Cleante how Tartuffe would offer him holy water while at the door. Furthermore, religion is seen as a huge factor as to why Orgon trusts Tartuffe so much. Tartuffe wins Orgon over by pretending to be a devout and pious man. While no specific religion or sect is named, we can deduce that it is a Bible based Christian religion and research tells us Roman Catholicism dominated the countries religious beliefs. This very much enticed a very fragile Orgon into believing this man was not a fraud but the truth. As seen in the book, Orgon looks like a lost sole in need of guidance, thus the main reason he has accepted Tartuffe is because he believes Tartuffe's piety and devoutness will be able to guide
