Understanding Others in Code Talker

Have you ever heard of the story of the Navajo code talkers that served in the U.S. Marines during World War II? Well the book Code Talker explores the life of a young Navajo named Ned who was taken away from his family at the age of 6 and joined the Marines when he was 16 as a code talker. He is then sent to several islands in the Pacific Ocean to fight the Japanese and send messages in the secret Navajo code. In this essay I will show you how the author of the book, Joseph Burchac displays understanding others through the character, Ned. First, Ned has emotional sympathy for the native people of the islands that he is sent to. This is because while on Bougainville he started to hang around with one of the natives of the island. Even though neither one of them speaks the other's language they can still learn more and understand each other. Next he learned about how horrible the Japanese had treated the native people on the islands they conquered, natives of the islands would often try to resist being invaded by the Japanese and those who did resist would be tortured. One example of this is when he becomes friends with Smitty and Georgia Boy. This shows that even though Navajos and Americans do not get along they can still develop friendships. The next example of this is when Ned decided to become a U.S. Marine to fight in World War II against the Japanese. Ned understood the severity of the war and knew that the U.S. needed help despite how the Americans had treated him. Lastly after Ned returns to America after fighting he is refused to be served at a dinner. Ned understands that the people at the dinner do not know what he did and went through, they just see him as any other
